One of the feelings that took a while to sink in is when you have a kid, there is no such thing as non-work, non-kid free time. Every waking moment is either for work or for your child (or for your husband/another family member).

To start with, school hours are outdated and less than work hours, so when you're not working, you're definitely with your kid unless you have an alternative arrangement like a maid, grandparents, or relatives at home. One of my aunties has a maid and I regularly see her leave for work at 7am and returns home at 10pm. She has a high-flying job and does theater class two evenings a week. Most nights she doesn't see her kids and she's fine with it. Each to their own and there's no judgement here.

The topic is for moms who are flitting between work and children because this is the path they have chosen, or it was chosen for them. I'm just sharing from my experience.

I used to think its because I have a full time job and my 'me time' and 'friends time' will be sorted once I have my own business. I was so exciting when leaving my full time job I told my friend I'd visit her for lunch at her office every month.

In reality, that's happened exactly once in two years.

The only reason it happened was that she was no longer working and I decided to make time for it no matter what. We ended up spending a fantastic six hours just catching up on everything because we've known each other since we were seven years old. It's so strange to have a one-on-one catch-up with friends without each others kids and husbands being there.

How do you all do it? Do you regularly catch up with your friends, or do you wait for them to initiate contact and then you make time for it? I'm not the initiator because whenever I get some 'me' time I just want to collapse and sleep, not in the mood for chat/complain sessions...
