Navigating the Complex World of Secrets with Kids
Secrets—it's such a tricky topic, isn’t it?
We’ve all told white lies and little fibs, so who are we to say that people shouldn’t lie or keep secrets? We want our kids to be open with us, so we tell them they need to share everything.
But then, we also expect them to keep family secrets.
It's a very confusing message they're getting.
I think it really boils down to whether they feel comfortable keeping a secret, especially when some secrets should be told, like if it involves harm.
Sometimes, kids might share with each other about being hurt but then feel scared to tell an adult.
It’s crucial for the kid to ask: is the secret harming them or someone else? If they keep quiet, will someone continue to get hurt?
Context is everything here, right? Take bullying for example.
Telling on a bully might lead to more immediate hurt for the one who speaks up, but maybe it’s a shorter-term pain compared to not telling at all.
It’s such a balancing act... and I think the best we can do as parents is to trust our kids that they have good judgement. Easier said than done when you see them day to day!
I wonder how other families handle secrets?
