I was thinking about how full our trolley is every time we go food shopping, and the bill at the checkout isn't small either.

Somehow, by the day before our next shop, the fridge is empty apart from a few sauces. How do we eat so much?

It doesn't feel like we eat a lot. We cook just enough for each meal, and we don't usually cook extra for the next day. The exception is batch cooking for my lunches and snacks. Apart from that, dinner is just enough for us.

Our portions are sensible, too. My son gets a smaller plate. At one point he complained that he was getting less than us, which was only because he was using the same size plate as we were, so of course his portion looked smaller.

I'd read that giving children smaller plates means they still feel like they've got a full plate and that tip works!

### Doing the Maths

There are three of us, and we eat three meals a day at home. We only get takeaway or eat out once a week at most.

Three portions, three meals a day, seven days a week. That's sixty-three portions of food.

Add in snacks and the bigger meals we sometimes have at weekends, and you're at about seventy portions every week. All of it is gone by the day before we shop again.

Seventy portions a week for a small family is pretty crazy. If you're a family of five or six, or even ten, your trolley must be STACKED.

So I'm curious: how do you manage it? Do you need two fridges? Do you buy more comfort food? Do you shop twice a week instead of once?
